Why We Clean Without Chemicals (And Why It Matters)

Pure water, powerful results

There is a reasonable assumption a lot of our customers make on the first quote: a stronger clean must mean stronger chemicals. It does not.

The cleanest results we deliver — on windows, homes, commercial glass and large building exteriors — come from a system that uses no detergents and no harsh chemicals at all. Just water, processed to the point that it cleans better than anything in a bottle. Here is why we built the business around this approach, and what it means for your home.

What Ultra-Pure Water Actually Means

Tap water in Whangārei looks clean to the eye, but it carries dissolved minerals — calcium, magnesium, sodium and traces of metals — that you cannot see.

When ordinary water dries on a window or a painted wall, those minerals are what get left behind. They are the spots, the streaks, and the chalky residue you see when a freshly washed window dries unevenly in the sun.

Ultra-pure water has had those minerals removed. We process the water through three stages: sediment filtration, carbon filtration, and a final pass through a deionising resin that pulls out the dissolved ions.

What comes out the other end is water that actively pulls dirt off whatever it touches and carries it away, then dries to nothing. No spots. No streaks. No residue.

Why It Cleans Better Than Detergents

Detergents work by surrounding particles of dirt and lifting them off the surface. They are effective, but they leave a residue of their own that has to be rinsed away.

Any rinse with ordinary tap water can deposit a fresh layer of minerals as it dries. That is why a window cleaned with chemicals can look great for a week, then start spotting again within a month.

Ultra-pure water cuts that cycle out completely. There is nothing left to rinse, because there is nothing on the surface that does not belong. The result is a window or wall that stays visibly cleaner for longer.

It Is Also Better for Everything Around Your Home

For Your Paint
Detergents and high-pressure blasting can both shorten the life of painted exteriors. Detergents can degrade the binding agents in modern paints over time, while high-pressure water can force moisture under the seal at the edges of cladding.

Pressure can also lift the surface microscopically and leave paint more vulnerable to UV degradation. A pure-water soft wash does neither.

For Your Plants and Pets
Anything washed off a house with chemicals ends up in the soil at the base of the wall. Rhododendrons, camellias, and established Northland natives do not react well to detergent run-off.

Pets also have a tendency to lick whatever is wet, and outdoor cats especially are not picky about where they walk. Ultra-pure water leaves no chemical residue on the path, lawn, garden, or outdoor surfaces.

For the Environment
Northland's stormwater systems run more or less directly to the harbour and coast. We try not to add to what is going into the catchment if we can avoid it.

A pure-water system means there is no chemical runoff entering the drains — just water carrying away the dirt that was on your house.

Where the System Works Best

We use ultra-pure water across most of what we do. The same approach scales from a single second-storey window all the way to a full commercial building exterior.

  • Window cleaning. The original use case. Carbon-fibre water-fed poles let us reach windows up to a second storey from the ground, and the spot-free finish means no rinsing or drying afterwards.
  • House washing. A gentle pre-treatment for mould and lichen where needed, followed by a soft wash with ultra-pure water across the cladding, soffits, joinery and eaves.
  • Building exterior cleaning. Commercial glass and cladding up to several storeys, including street-front retail glass that needs to look perfect every day.
  • Solar panel cleaning. Solar panels lose efficiency when they are dirty, and chemical residue is the worst possible thing to leave on a panel surface. Pure water cleans them and dries to nothing.

Where It Does Not Work and What We Use Instead

A few jobs need different tools, and we use them. Hard surfaces like concrete driveways, brick paths and oil-stained garage floors need higher pressure than a soft wash to get clean, so for those we use a pressure washer.

Sanitising and disinfection work uses approved antiviral and antibacterial products applied either manually or by fogging. Construction clean-ups occasionally need targeted solvents.

We are upfront about it, and we use the right tool for the job rather than trying to make one approach do everything.

What This Means for You

The cleanest result we can deliver on most homes and most exteriors comes from a system that uses no harsh chemicals at all.

It is gentler on your paint and garden, does not leave streaks or residue, and stays cleaner for longer. It is also one of the reasons Pane in the Glass is the cleaning service most often recommended in Whangārei — the difference holds up over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I wash my house?

Most Northland homes benefit from a soft wash every twelve to eighteen months. Properties on the coast, under tall trees, or with darker paintwork often look noticeably better with an annual clean.

Will the chemicals harm my plants or pets?

There aren't any harsh chemicals. We use a gentle pre-treatment for mould and lichen where needed, and the bulk of the wash is ultra-pure water from carbon-fibre poles. We're conscious of garden beds, ponds and pets, and we'll talk you through anything sensitive before we start.

Is soft washing better than water blasting?

For painted exteriors, yes. High-pressure blasting can drive water under cladding, lift paint, and leave a rougher surface that gets dirty more quickly. A soft wash cleans deeply without the wear. Hard surfaces like concrete drives and paths still benefit from blasting — that's a separate service we can quote alongside the house wash.

How long does it take?

Single-storey: usually a half-day. Two-storey: usually a full day. Larger or more complex homes occasionally run into a second day. We'll give you a clear time estimate when we quote.

Do I need to be home?

Not necessarily. As long as we've got access and you're happy for us to work, we can carry on while you're at work or out for the day. We'll text you when we're finished.

What about my windows?

Most customers add an exterior window clean to their house wash — same visit, same crew, much better price than two separate jobs. We'll quote the two together if you'd like.

Are you fully insured?

Yes. Pane in the Glass is fully insured and follows New Zealand Health and Safety standards on every job. Happy to provide a certificate of currency on request.

Can I book a regular service?

Yes. Many of our customers book annual or eighteen-monthly washes and we'll get in touch when the next one is due.
